Musical Vibes of The Noughties

I've been ordered into making a list of my favourite songs my one of my besties who I coincidentally met in The Noughties. Umm, I'm not going to put them in order due to the fact that they are all individual and you cant put them into categories for such a large range of criteria that is taken into account. Do you mind? If you do, tough titties, that's the way it is.

~Kings and Queens - 30 Seconds To Mars - 2009
the video is SO amazing, YouTube it! It features a fire-breathing clown and an army of gas mask-wearing bicycle messengers patrolling the streets of L.A (which they closed down specifically for the video! lots of planning and preparation i think you'll agree. The message i got from it first time was how music can be the great uniter bringing all manner of people together on the journey of life (corny isn't it?) The bicycles are used to promote the environmental issues our world faces today and how simple transport could be in the future if we all helped in our own way. this was represented through costumes and various bikes, for example Penny Farthings and stunt bikes to reach out to all age groups. "The Horse" — the name of the bit that shows a majestic white stallion galloping in slow motion down a deserted city street. It's a startling, eye-popping image, one only amplified by the soundtrack: a chorus of young voices, chanting in unison that was recorded around the world and woven together to form a united force. Listening to the voice full volume with my eyes shut and everything quiet around me to concentrate my senses on the music was an otherworldly experience that brought goosebumps to my arms and caused my temples to tingle. A masterpiece or musical art that speaks.

~Sleep Walking - Joe Brooks - 2008
I stumbled across this young man on My space a couple of months ago and simply fell for him. Looks, talent to the extreme and a love for all things retro and vintage, it was like it was meant to be. Its an acoustic song, as is the album, written when he was 16 about a relationship that he's trying to salvage. Its a feel good song though, not too mushy and not to much of a muchness if you know what I mean as acoustic songs can be. Its all about looking to the future and saying 'look, just do it. ~Numb - Linkin Park - 2003
Once again a fantastic song to play at top volume(even better in the car wash for some reason, but I wont go into that phenomenon just yet, that's for another blog)I like the lyrics and how they go together with the music. Its sad and angry at the same time they put there words out there. They say what they want to say. There's no need to study the words to get their meaning. I am a big fan of Linkin Park and Numb is the best song they have done so far. It has such an energy to it, some kind of force? It just lets you get it all out of your system without totally losing it yourself, the music just releases you in a way.

~Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield - 2005
Just a feel good song basically, looking to the future is something everyone our my age group is doing at the moment. Every ones to tense at the moment its a great song to sing into your hairbrush and unwind to. One of those songs that makes you forget what the weathers like (bloody snow) or whats going on at school (bloody teachers) at transports you to the good times, to the summer, to the warmth of your friends and of the sun. ~Right Where It Belongs - Nine Inch Nails - 2005 (seems to be a good year)
This song is absolutely glorious. Deep and personal, and left up to the listener on what the interpretation is. This song, to me, is like reflecting on yourself. As in "If you look at your reflection, is it all you want it to be?"
Well is it? And the line "Keep on looking but you can't find the words, are you hiding in retreat?" really hits me. When you have so many things you want to say, but you can't. Trent is more focused on trying to get people to open their minds to thinking in different ways than just the normal way most people think. I think his mission is to get people to think more philosophically so that they CAN find the answers they need. He wants to show people the questions that lie out there...not solve all of the problems for them. It's about getting people to really live their lives, and think about things instead of just accepting life the way our society tells us it is. It's not about trying to solve people's problems or giving out all the answers. Trent knows that part of life is searching for your answers. He's just helping to bring the questions out of all the mess.
Every time I listen to this song, going back to the point where he sings "You keep looking but you can't find the words, Are you hiding in retreat?" It also sounds like he's saying "You keep looking but you can't find the woods are you hiding in the trees? Is it just me? Its so clever the way he's done that; to stop and make you think about it. Beautiful song, a masterpiece.

~Moonlight - Yiruma - unknown
Just listen to it. Let it guide you. Let it send you off to sleep. Follow the journey. An outstanding piece of music that everyone has the potential to appreciate at some point in their lives.

~Fireflies - Owl City - 2009
This song makes me feel like a small child again; filled with wonder and hope and plain joy.it is rare that music is this purely happy and good t makes me feel like everything is going to be okay. I have a few theories about this one, bear with me:) I think this song is about the growing up and letting go of childhood, while still embracing our dreams and acting upon a few of them ("I saved a few and kept them in a jar"), with the fireflies representing those dreams. Maybe he's saying that all those moments of childhood like all the firefly references were his escape, and he wishes he could go back to those days? Another possibility is that this may also have a sadder mood to it. like how he keeps saying "please take me away from here"and also "Its hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep Cause everything is never as it seems" to me, when it is said and seen in this light to me he is kinda saying something is going wrong for him, and he cant sleep because he is so tired of it, but he would rather be asleep when he is awake. So many theories but truly an epic gentle song.

~Tumble Down - Marcus Foster - 2009
And tonight, it’s an intimate experience. Just me and Marcus’s songs as I wander this night alone. Listening to “Tumble Down,” I walk with him through the “pointless danger and twisted sorrow” and I see it all “tumble down” through his eyes…his heart. It’s intimate. Just me and him. Marcus’s lyrics are smoky, steamy, earthy, and shiveringly romantic. His voice is gorgeous – a little raspy, husky, but melodic with a lilting falsetto and full – full of that something else that you can’t define. You just want to run in the rain and feel the drops fall sweet and wet on your face…you want to drive forever under the moon and watch the world unfurl before you. You want to cradle in the silver arms of the moon with stars drifting by…You want to be everything you ever wanted to be. This is what it’s like to listen to Marcus Foster’s music. Especially on a Friday night ...alone. Seeing a seemingly beautiful city the way it really is, all the problems to be faced, all the wrong decisions made and how eerie the past can be of those around you and yourself.

~Vermillion Pt2 - Slipknot - 2008
This song is amazing. It is one of those songs where the meaning can be changed to suit many feelings and situations so as to give people a sense of understanding. But a meaning i found in these lyrics is actually that Corey is talking about a complete fantasy. He is singing about a girl that is make believe, the "perfect" girl. She isn't real and her can't make her real so it torments him and it makes him sad that he can't find this girl. But he won't sit by and let his torment build up and he realises that he will have to make do with the, so to speak, imperfect girl. And in that sense i find it relates to me alot. An absolutely amazing song. Something that you would not expect from Slipknot, but still - incredible... its a good sad I feel when listening. Its heart felt and true, and I really do enjoy that. It also fits well with part one, if you have the right thoughts.

~Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking - Snow Patrol - 2008
The song is rather abstract, but I think he's marveling at how so many different things are happening at once. Somewhere someone is dying, somewhere a war is being fought, the world is playing out its drama. In the meantime time is very constant, "safe and sound," and nobody can mess with time. The song and the title has a similar feel to Coldplay's "Clocks," it has a chilly, zoned-out feel and I the title might be Lightbody's way of paying tribute to that band.
I like the "death" theory too at a stretch, all of the pairs of lines can be interpreted as a death of some sort, and the musical style seems to match it. the loud bits seem to exemplify the unexpectedness of death. I like it. i hope you do too.
